Mason’s Musings June 16th, 2023

Summer is racing past, but when you’re having fun everything seems to go by so fast. Speaking of racing, our Krum patrons are knocking it out of the park with this year’s race themed Battle of the Books. Sanger has a total of 54,383 points while Krum has accumulated a whopping 212,547! Keep up the great work and we’ll be barreling through the finish line in no time!

If you haven’t already heard we will be hosting Dragon’s Stuffed Animal Sleepover once again! It all starts on June 16th @ 6:30 PM with a special pajama story time with Ms. Katie. Kids can come dressed in their jammies, and bring their stuffed companions. After story time is over the kids will leave their stuffies here to have a sleepover with our library dragon! (who you may have seen sitting at the front desk.) Pictures will be posted on social media throughout the night showing all the fun adventures dragon and the stuffies had. And, when you pick up your cuddly pal the next day you’ll be sent home with a pamphlet with pictures of your stuffie and dragon together!

Other events we have coming up include our cake decorating class, which will be taught by local baker Brandi with Brandi’s Bakery. This event will require pre-registration and is limited to ages 10+.

And we will also be hosting TNT time with a repeat of our Movie Magic event for those who missed out on it in the spring. Learn the basics of stop-motion animation and create your own mini-movie that you’ll be able to share with anyone! TNT time is for teens and tweens ages 10-18

This upcoming week also includes some very important holidays such as Father’s Day and Juneteenth. For those who are unaware, Juneteenth, which is also known as Emancipation Day, is the celebration of freedom for enslaved African Americans. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation, which was passed January 1st 1863, freed all slaves, Texas hadn’t heard the news.

The official day of freedom for Texas enslaved African Americans came when Union soldier, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Bay with his troops. He proclaimed freedom for all slaves in Texas on June 19th 1865. It is important the we recognize this momentous milestone in American history and honor all those who fought to make it a reality.

I hope you all have a great week ahead of you and that you maybe learned something new. We should always strive to keep history alive and push for the education of these subjects. Happy Father’s Day to all you hardworking dads out there including those who say they don’t want any gifts (at least that’s what my dad says.) Have a great weekend and I hope to see you all at Dragon’s Sleepover.
